As a part of the academic curriculum, students of B.Arch II,and B.arch III from Faculty of Architecture, SCET. Surat had undergone a related study program by visiting Jaisalmer in December,2019. The total number of 40 students visited jaisalmer from B.arch II and B.arch III undertook a documentation exercise for 6 days. Aim The primary aim of the study tour was to make students understand the traditional community housing patterns and typologies in context of Jaisalmer. Further this study will also instill a perspective to understand the minute cultural complexities of traditional communities and their settlements in the city. Objectives Groups of students were divided into various clusters of the city to identify different typologies based on religion, occupation, culture, lifestyle, economic status etc, to understand the core of various traditional housing settlements. students documented the Ancient haveli patwon ji ki haveli ,bada bagh,jaisalmer fort,raj mahal palace ,laxminath temple . this brings them closer to the understanding of the application of ancient architecture and daily life.. The main objectives of the study were:- 1. To locate various typologies in the city and find out their historical background, family size, cultural values, importance in the locality/cluster etc. 2. Students will also document and study the physical aspects of the identified typology in terms of its plan form, climatic considerations, design features, peculiar characteristics, construction technologies and architectural language. 3. The study also includes the understanding of overall settlement pattern of the particular cluster or neighborhood. 4. To understand various relationships of the identified built typology in the cluster and the neighborhood in terms of its development in the course of history. 5. To document and study the typical architectural elements indigenous to Jaisalmer. Outcome:- Students documented various typologies of the housing settlements and will bring out the required understanding of the same by compilation of all the typologies and settlements as a comprehensive study of Jaisalmer. The final analysis of the study will underline all the aspects mentioned earlier, which will serve as a base for their design studio (community housing design) in the semester.
